Analysis of Questionaire Responses from the Airport2025 Conference

At the AIRPORT 2025 conference (June 28 – 30, 2005) attendees were asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding their perceptions or knowledge of the current state of aviation security and identified the most important issues and factors to consider in devising the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NGATS) 2025 end state.

Attendees were asked to respond to ten questions on aviation security, two of which asked for points of contact.

The questions were:

1.

What are we missing in the current picture of aviation security?

2.

Who should we contact to learn more (about your response to #1)?

3.

Is there a technology or process we should consider in order to develop a better future picture?

4.

Who should we contact to learn more (about your response to #3)?

5.

What do you see as the two top security problems today?

6.

What do you see as the two top security problems in 2010?

6a.

What do you see as the two top security solutions in 2010?

7.

What do you see as the two top security problems in 2015?

7a.

What do you see as the two top security solutions in 2015?

8.

Any other comments, complaints, criticisms, violent or otherwise?

The content analysis of the responses shown below was performed by selecting key words in each individual answer, and then grouping these “hits”.  For instance, the “systems design” category would include the grouping of any reference to the use of technologies or policies, in the generic sense, in the screening of the passengers and their bags even though he did not specifically use the words “systems design”. In the same way, the “perimeter security” grouping would include any reference to any means to secure the borders of the airport, even though the responder might not have used the specific term “perimeter security”. There were many responses that were mentioned by only one responder. While only the most relevant of these are shown, every attempt was made to include as many of the responses as practicable.

We did not include answers to questions 2 and 4, which asked for names of persons to contact to learn more about particular issues.

The DHS Security Integrated Product Team thanks you for your comments and will review them in its mission of identifying DHS requirements for the NGATS. They have been passed on to the TSA’s Chief Technical Officer. We continue to seek your input. We encourage those of you who did not complete the questionnaire at the Conference to provide your responses at this time.
